The aim of the Serology Section is to implement the control measures envisaged by the State Food and Veterinary Service in the sphere of health and prevention of diseases of domestic and wild animals. The department executes monitoring programmes for brucellosis in livestock, sheep and goats and enzootic bovine leucosis; the plague of wild fauna and classical swine fever (CSF) of domestic animals, swine vesicular disease (SVD), food and mouth disease and Aujeszky‘s disease, bird highly pathogenic avian influenza and Newcastle disease. These programmes are elaborated each year pursuant to the veterinary laws, legal acts of the European Union and the Republic of Lithuania regulating the requirements for control of infectious diseases of animals. The aim of the programmes is to identify the epidemiologic situation of infectious diseases of animals, as well as harmful factors and health condition of animal herds, groups or flocks.

The data of serology investigations is considered as animal protection control.

Qualified specialists of the department investigate infectious diseases with a view to identifying the anti-bodies against a certain agent of bacterial or viral disease.

The Section is equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment and is a guarantee of high quality test results. Recently a modern haematological analisator, microscope, spectrophotometer and other relevant devices have been acquired.

 The Section also carries out more than fifty investigations of various infectious diseases for various animals prepared for international and local trade, exhibitions and competitions as well as in case of suspect of a disease and during the epidemiological survey.

 Serology Section maintains close relationship with the national investigation laboratories of the European Union. Circular and comparative investigations are executed. Our employees execute scientific-research work, upgrade their qualification in various workshops, conferences and internships.

Serology Section is one of the most important laboratories since it executes primary reviews of infectious diseases in domestic and wild animals.
